Villa La Cappella, a Tuscan vacation rental looking over the Lucca countryside, has been a rental of ours since 1998 or so. We have been there a few times as well over the years, and if you find a stray current converter - it's mine! Run by an efficient team of professionals in design and management, you get the best of all worlds here with style, comfort, privacy, views and furnishings. Its history started in 1700's or so as a convent (the monks and nuns always had the best places) until the late 20th century. Now in the hands of a talented architect, the renovation and expansion of La Cappella is an exercise of excellence in space, furnishings and interior details honoring its history and views...and great views they are. This place is professionally run and every bedroom is ensuite. La Cappella can sleep a total of 18 people. There are three self catering apartments upstairs sleeping 10 and downstairs the "villa" sleeps eight.
Perfect for: Large groups.
The Details:
Villa space - stretches over the length of the old convent and is on two floors. A long hallway with wood floors has the bedrooms where there are 3 double/queen size beds and one twin bedded room.
At the far end of the rental is the living room, 100 square meters with large windows lining three walls. Light pours into the space and views dazzle the eyes. The ceiling is all wooden beams not unlike a lodge in Montana's Tetons and a fireplace complements this thought. Really special this one. There is a wide spiral stair that descends to the kitchen/dining room that spreads over about 75 square meters. One floor down via circular stairs is the kitchen and cookery.
Upper floor with private apartments:
Crazy Land Apartment (sleeps 4) -
1 double bed room with shower room. 1 twin bedded room with shower room. Large living room with extra sofa bed that sleeps 2 people, an American style kitchen.
Red Hill Apartment (sleeps 4) -

Although we are biased on such matters, and may be preaching to the choir, Lucca is arguably the best city in Tuscany. It is also the closest to most of our Lucca based rentals. There are loads of reasons this is a great place to visit (olive oil for example, lack of tourists another). To the benefit of you and the proud locals, Lucca has completely retained the original thick walls around the centro storico. As the wide walls lost their military importance, abruptly ended with the conquering Bonaparte in 1805, no match for his modern might, they became as they are today: a pedestrian only park that rings the city entirely providing a wonderful view of the countryside and city below. Lucca is a perfect place to spend a day, or when you have a little extra time between other touring, you can easily slug it in and never tire of its streets, alleys, sights and shops. It is a perfect place to walk around, the walls not withstanding (in fact for the walls we suggest renting a bike and seeing the city that way - on the walls and off). We fondly call it "Florence without the scooters, people or museums." But still enough great restaurants, piazze, cafes, gelati and upscale shopping to attract the discerning folk. Here is a quick guide to our favorite restaurants (also found in more detail on our recommended restaurants in Lucca page):
Da Giulio, on via Conce Piazza San Donato
La Buca, on via della Cervia
Osteria Baralla, on via Anfiteatro
Antico Cafe, on Piazzale Vittorio Emanuele
